Thoughtful Scotsman

Did you hear about the thoughtful Scotsman who was heading out to the pub ? He turned to his wee wife before leaving and said, 'Margaret - put your hat and coat on lassie.'
She replied, ' Awe Jock that's nice - are you taking me to the pub with you ?'
'Nah, Jock replied, I'm switching the central heating off while I'm oot.'

Cottage Fife Guest Comment August 2009

Cottage Fife Guest Comment August 2009

Dear Vyvyen & Ewart
Am emailing belatedly to say what a lovely week we had in Castaway at the end of August. It was made all the better by extending it over the bank holiday weekend.
We weren't sure how to post a message on the guestbook site (am ok on email, not so good with blogs etc!) so have taken ages to send a comment.
We just want to say that we enjoyed our second stay as much as our first. The cottage is very comfortable and the location great. It offered the peace & relaxation that we wanted. Our daughter loved having the freedom to roam on the beach without an over protective parent hovering (too) close by!
We loved Lower Largo and the food at the Crusoe Hotel was gorgeous. We visited other local beaches -Cambo sands being our favourite - as well as Kellie Castle & the Scottish Deer Centre. We also went in to Edinburgh & St Andrews. All in all it was a really lovely holiday. We even got some sunshine!
We hope to stay again next time we come to Fife.
Kind Regards
Helen Knott

Holiday Cottage Fife August 2009

Holiday Cottage Fife August 2009

Seashell cottage was so well equipped and cosy. It was like home away from home with the added benefits of a fantastic beach only yards away, a sleepy village through which to wander and The Crusoe Hotel within arms reach serving fantastic food at reasonable prices by very friendly staff.
The coastal road is scenic and gives easy access to pretty fishing villages, Crail, Elie and Pittenweem to name a few. A short drive away is the stunning city of St Andrews, the views of which as you head in from Lower Largo are spectacular.
I would recommend this spot to anyone, whether wanting complete escapism, a great base to explore the local area or a great family break with the beach on your doorstep.
Must add that, one day whilst there, I read in the paper that there were 340,000 people on Bournemouth beach that day. On the beach at Lower Largo there were dog walkers, a family playing rounders and me! Fantastic!
Couldn't have been easier to book and organise and a newspaper and welcome pack also awaited! Enjoyed it so much I've just booked to go back at Easter!

Perth Self Catering August September 2009
Just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed my holiday at Tay Chambers and how sorry I am that it is coming to an end.
The apartment is lovely and comfortable and I never tire of looking out at the river. As you know the reason I came to Perth was so I could see Runrig at Scone Palace and I really enjoyed that day. I have had a wonderful time exploring the local area and have indulged my love of history by visiting museums and castles.
I would definitely recommend Tay Chambers as a lovely place to holiday.

Kind regards Pauline

Our Stay at Weavers Hall Cottage, Fife May 2009
Back in Holland, we would like to say that our stay in the Weavers Hall was very pleasant and convenient. We have had a wonderful week in Scotland. We have seen a lot of wonderful places, like Edinburgh, the Falkirk Wheel, St. Andrews' Cathedral, Alnwick, Pittenweem, Stirling Castle, Hill of Tarvit and Falkland Palace & garden.
Everything was great. The weather, the people, the activities we did and especially the Weavers Hall. It was lovely !!
We had a bit of bad luck that the Bear Tavern in the mainstreet had already been closed and there was no cook in the Inn at the begin of the street, where people usually could have lunches or wholemeals. In spite of that, we had a wonderful week.
Thank you very much.
With kind regards, from Holland,
Mrs. Annie (Melcherts) Hollink

Last King of Scotland DVD

Last King of Scotland DVD

As the evil Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, Forest Whitaker gives an unforgettable performance in The Last King of Scotland. Powerfully illustrating the terrible truth that absolute power corrupts absolutely, this fictionalised chronicle of Amin's rise and fall is based on the acclaimed novel by Giles Foden, in which Amin's despotic reign of terror is viewed through the eyes of Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy), a Scottish doctor who arrives in Uganda in the early 1970s to serve as Amin's personal physician. His outsider's perspective causes him to be initially impressed by Amin's calculated rise to power, but as the story progresses--and as Whitaker's award-worthy performance grows increasingly monstrous--The Last King of Scotland turns into a pointed examination of how independent Uganda (a British colony until 1962) became a breeding ground for Amin's genocidal tyranny. As Whitaker plays him, Amin is both seductive and horribly destructive sometimes in the same breath and McAvoy effectively conveys the tragic cost of his character's naiveté, which grows increasingly prone to exploitation. As directed by Kevin Macdonald who made the riveting semi-documentary Touching the Void, this potent cautionary tale my prompt some viewers to check out Barbet Schroeder's equally revealing documentary General Idi Amin Dada, an essential source for much of this film's authentic detail. Jeff Shannon

Forest Whitaker delivers an Oscar-winning, ferociously commanding performance as bloodthirsty Ugandan president Idi Amin in Kevin MacDonald’s THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND. Adapted from the novel by Giles Foden, the film recounts Amin’s horrific reign through the eyes of a fictional character, Nick Garrigan (James McAvoy), a young doctor from Scotland who travels to Uganda hoping to do some good. Nick is more sanguine about new president Amin than his counterpart Sarah Merrit (Gillian Armstrong) is, whose experience causes her to be sceptical of Amin’s bombastic declarations. After an automobile accident, Nick is called in to treat the president’s wounds. His authoritative behaviour impresses Amin, who charms Nick into becoming his personal physician. Nick embraces his newfound life of luxury, but he is unable to grasp the reality of the situation. When he does finally realise the atrocities Amin is inflicting upon his people (and is also capable of inflicting on Nick), the terrified doctor tries to make a frantic escape before it's too late. MacDonald, director of the acclaimed documentaries ONE DAY IN SEPTEMBER and TOUCHING THE VOID, makes a startlingly assured transition into fictional filmmaking with THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND. Working with cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (THE CELEBRATION) and editor Justine Wright, MacDonald brings 1970s Uganda to pulsating life, perfectly recreating that tumultuous era. But ultimately the film belongs to Whitaker: as he shifts from charming to maniacal in the space of a short, unexpected breath, he infuses Amin with startling humanity.
